How to register company in Malaysia?

First of all, there are several types of Businesses available in Malaysia and you need to know which is the most suitable for your current business. There are Sole Proprietorship (Enterprise or Trading), Partnership (Wandagal and Partners)
Sendirian Berhad (Sdn Bhd or Private Limited Pte Ltd)

The first two types are most popular and common in Malaysia as it involves less people and they are the cheapest to register. It is also the most popular among all new Small-Medium Enterprises (SME) owners in the country.

Sole proprietorship business can have only 1 registered owner while Partnership business can have 2 owners and a maximum or 20 registered partners.

While Sendirian Berhad (Sdn Bhd) business needs to have a minimum of ONE director who doesn’t hold a bankruptcy history and also a minimum of ONE shareholder.

What is Companies Commission Malaysia (SSM)?

The SSM (Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia) is a statutory body that regulates companies and business bodies in Malaysia. They there are to help in providing business information to the public when required.

After you have done the registration process with SSM, you will receive your Business Registration Certificate in within an hours time (This is only applicable if you register at official SSM branches in the country). The licence you received will be valid for 1 to 5 years (as your choice) and can be renewed at an annual basis.

SSM Branches are everywhere across Malaysia and there is at least 1 in every state. If you are not sure about it, the official SSM website have all the information you needed, be sure to check it out and find the most convenient branch for yourself. There is an alternative way to register your business, that is, through online portal (SSM e-lodgement). This method allows you to register for business without being in queue or visit the SSM branch, but it might need a longer time to process as compared to a walk-in registration. Still, keep in mind that any businesses that runs without a legal Business Registration Certificate will be faced with a penalty of up to RM 50,000 or a maximum of 2 years imprisonment.
